BEHIND THE BRAND

Lauren Shuster grew up in South Africa, and currently resides in Los Angeles. She developed an interest in fashion at a very early age. As a teenager, Lauren would often design and make her own clothes, and she would also make outfits for her little sisters. After graduating from high school, she interned for her Mother’s interior design business, where she developed her passion for textiles. She went on to pursue a degree in Interior Design. Lauren moved to Southern California and worked for one of the top interior design firms in Los Angeles, designing multimillion dollar homes for celebrities like Janet Jackson and Magic Johnson. Thereafter, she launched her own business, designing high-end luxury linens made from fabrics sourced from the finest mills in the world.

The fashion bug was still biting so, in 2010, Lauren partnered with Leigh Bortz, her best friend of 25 years, who also happened to be a talented stylist and photographer. And, just like that, Leigh & La was born.
 

ABOUT LEIGH & LA

Leigh & La’s concept is simple: comfortable, stylish clothes that are durable as well as versatile. They have discovered that Los Angeles can have many seasons in one day, which requires a look that can evolve from day to night and from season-to-season. Leigh & La’s clothing embodies an on-the-go lifestyle by blending city and coastal elements with its casual and traditional tomboy take on classic styles.

Leigh and La’s core customer appreciates super soft, luxurious fabrics, has a relaxed, confident style, an adventurous spirit and a more minimalistic non-fussed approach to living and dressing. Leigh & La are inspired by the California lifestyle, exotic destinations and iconic women that are comfortable in their own skin and are able to put their own stamp and sense of style onto the basic canvas that Leigh & La have created.
 

DESIGNER Q & A

W2C: What is the price point of the line?
L&L: Between about $55 and $200.

W2C: What do you believe your best selling items will be?
L&L: The Boulder’s Hoodie, the Hout Bay Tunic and the Clifton Tee (which will be featured in the September Issue of Cosmo). All of these pieces retail for under $200!

W2C: What was the inspiration behind the line?
L&L: We have known one another for 25 years, and we used to borrow each other’s clothing! We have always had a mutual admiration for each other’s style. When we grew up, we decided to start our own company and make our own clothing. We are inspired by the casual California lifestyle and by European sophistication, and we love easy to wear and easy to wash pieces that are also extremely chic. This inspiration lead to the ultimate look of our line: the melding of California and European influences at a reasonable price point.

W2C: What is your vision for the brand?
L&L: We are all about sticking to the basics while making sure that we always maintain an incredible attention to detail. We want to create beautiful pieces that can translate from season to season.

W2C: What do you love most about the design process?
L&L: We absolutely love brainstorming together. We have this ability to read each other’s minds. We are so excited at the notion of painting our own wardrobes and instinctively creating what we want to see and wear.

When it comes to shopping, we love NET-A-PORTER! Our favorite designers include the likes of Brunello Cucinelli, Vintage YSL and Missoni (we love the idea of being able to dress up a basic piece with fabulous splashes of color). We also love Fashionista, The Sartorialist (great archives), Cupcakes and Cashmere, 4th and Bleeker and The Glamourai.
